If you are looking for a place to go out in the Wichita Falls area, then Lucy Park is an excellent choice. The park is a beautiful open space that has a lot of different things that people can do including walking trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. In this blog post I will talk about some of my favorite aspects of Lucy Park and why it should be your next stop when you want to get outside in the great wide open. Lucy Park is a perfect place for family and friends to spend the day. It has two lakes, an amphitheater, playgrounds, walking trails and picnic areas. The park was built in 1964 by Wichita Falls Parks and Recreation Department Director Sammie Rayburn with the help of equipment from the U.S Army Corps of Engineers. Tucked into a large, sweeping bend of the Wichita River among the cottonwoods and pecan trees is one of Wichita Falls' favorite park sites. As if Wichita Falls isn't peaceful enough, this park adds another spot for peaceful relaxation or a place for your children to unleash their energy. Where is the park located? Located in the Panhandle Plains Region of Texas, Lucy Park is located at the center of Wichita Falls along I-44. Look for the sign when you get closer. Although the city's namesake, Wichita Falls, was swept away during a flood in 1886, a suitable replacement was built in 1987 just upstream of the original waterfall. One of the main focal points of Lucy Park, the 54 foot waterfall with a multi-level cascade, is reached over concrete paved pathway. Are you able to swim anywhere inside of the park? Swimming is Can you bike in Lucy Park? Absolutely. Biking is a popular sport here. Doubling as a bike path (the start of the city's Circle Trail System), the concrete trail follows the river through a beautiful landscaped setting for a 15 minute walk to the falls. The waterfall is also a rare treat for south-bound I-44 travelers as they may catch a glimpse of the falls at the Wichita River Bridge. Its a fantastic photo op. The I-44 exit, just before the bridge, attracts photographers who hope to capture a great image of the falls.Besides photography, what other activities can you enjoy? The park also offers an inviting group of picnic shelters and individual picnic sites. Park activities include swimming, basketball, disc golf, volleyball, biking and playground activities for the youngsters. The park’s pond setting, complete with ducks and geese, attracts couples wishing to enjoy a casual stroll in the park. I love the walking trails. They are a great way to get outside and explore nature without having to go too far from Wichita Falls. They also make it easy for children or pets that may not be able to hike very long distances with you on longer hikes. There is one trail in particular, called Rainbow Trail, which my family really enjoys Are all of the waterfalls in Lucy Park man made? How much of it is a natural setting? There is only one waterfall at this park, and it is along the river trail on the southeast side, near the I-44 interstate. The original location of the Wichita Falls is about a 1.5 mile east along the Wichita River. Those falls were washed away. The park is a great place to get outside, exercise and enjoy nature. You can bike, run or walk on the trails in the morning before work for some fresh air and an invigorating workout. In the afternoon you could take your dog for a long walk around the lake or play with your kids at one of many playgrounds scattered throughout Lucy Park Wichita Falls Texas. If it’s nice out during lunchtime you can find several picnic tables where you can eat your packed lunch while watching people jog by or sitting under one of our many shady trees. On Friday evenings we have free movie nights open to all ages that are shown on our big outdoor screen overlooking Lake Wichita Falls so make sure to stop by between 6-8
